Upper Cervical Chiropractic comes in many forms these days. Most chiropractors know the importance of the upper cervical spine (occiput ( base of the skull), atlas (1st cervical bone) and axis (2nd cervical bone), but few know how to adjust it with precision. Precision is important because the Atlas surrounds the brain stem. When the Atlas is out of alignment it can create pressure on the brain stem distorting the messages that the brain is trying to send the parts of the body. Pressure on the brain stem can cause illness in any part of the body.

Not all chiropractors pay special attention to the Atlas. But I do. We have a special table called an Atlas Orthogonal Percussion Adjusting Instrument. While I believe it is important to adjust any spinal segment that is out of alignment putting pressure on a nerve that goes to cells, tissues and organs, I also know that combining specific upper cervical adjustments has yielded better results.
